missingN▯ is a character in Vampire Survivors that starts with the weapon Axe or Death Spiral (50% chance of either).

Unlocking[]

Sprite-Forbidden Scrolls of Morbane "With the most adverse fate in Green Acres, run off the edge of the world."

To unlock missingN▯, the Yellow Sign must first be unlocked. The player must enter Green Acres with hyper mode and hurry mode enabled. After heading south precisely 18 tilesets (map tiles) and west precisely 18 tilesets, the area's appearance will change drastically. After this happens, all the stages in the game will morph together and giant winged eyes will begin to spawn. After killing 128 of them, missingN▯ can be bought from the character select menu.

Alternatively, missingN▯ can be unlocked in the Forbidden Scrolls of Morbane by casting the Spell "rightninetyseven".

Passive bonuses[]

missingN▯'s base stats are randomized every time the character selection screen is opened. The final stat is determined by the base stat and the stat from PowerUps.

There are several interesting possible scenarios that may occur:

  • If Max Health is negative, missingN▯ becomes invincible.
  • If Max Health is 0, missingN▯ instantly dies.
  • If MoveSpeed is lower than -100%, the controls become inverted.
  • If MoveSpeed is exactly -100%, missingN▯ won't be able to move.
  • If Growth is -100% or lower, missingN▯ cannot gain experience.
  • If Curse is exactly -100% enemies will not spawn. Lower than -100% has enemies spawn but not move, and the The Reaper will actually retreat.
  • If Luck is -100% or lower, no chests will drop.

Trivia[]

  • missingN▯ used to be unlocked by killing The Reaper. Since the addition of Mask of the Red Death, any previously unlocked missingN▯ characters were converted to Mask of the Red Death. Because of this, missingN▯ could not be unlocked with an unmodified save until a new unlock method was added in patch 0.11.209.
  • Not only are missingN▯'s stats calculated randomly, but its name and ability description also contain randomly-generated characters in the ASCII range 0x00 - 0xde:
    • Its name is determined as missingN▯, where '▯' represents a random character.
    • Its description is determined as 'M(▯▯), where '▯' represents a random character.
  • The name and item on missingN▯'s smaller character tile is the name and item when it was previously selected.
    • After selecting missingN▯, its current name and weapon is displayed on the larger character tile.
    • Upon startup, its name is initially "LATODISOTTO" (Italian for "underside"), and its item is the Duplicator. This is purely aesthetic.
  • The spell "rightninetyseven" (unlocked in the Forbidden Scrolls of Morbane, used as an alternate way to unlock MissingN▯), is likely a reference to "Lost Number" from the original Final Fantasy VII. In which a secret code was needed to unlock a safe, "(Right 36), (Left 10), (Right 59), (Right 97)", upon inputting the last missing number into the safe (Right 97), "Lost Number" would appear.

missingN▯ is a reference to a variety of different glitches from the early Pokémon games:

  • Both its name and first two appearances are a reference to the famous glitch of similar name from the Generation I Pokémon games.
    • The 128 enemy requirement and the Duplicator initial item references how using MissingNo. in battle would give you 128 of the item in your 6th bag slot.
    • The random stats may refer to MissingNo. actually being 39 different Pokémon with the same name. Some versions have different stats, and some take their stats from different Pokémon.
    • The unlock requirement of walking 'off the edge of the world' may be in reference to the unique glitch used to encounter MissingNo. in the Spanish and Italian versions of the game, which involves walking through walls into unintended areas.
  • missingN▯'s description is an additional reference to a less renowned glitch Pokémon from Pokémon Red and Blue, which often appears identical.
  • The glitchy background Green Acres changes to when unlocking missingN▯ is a reference to the Glitch City glitches in the first two generations of Pokémon, which similarly change the map into an amalgamation of various map tiles. This glitch can be used to encounter MissingNo. itself.
    • One method of accessing Glitch City is to walk out of bounds, much like the unlock requirement of walking 'off the edge of the world.' This is also the method used to access Glitch Cities in the Generation II games.
    • The main method of accessing Glitch City requires you to run out of time in the Safari Zone, which may be referenced by the requirement of Hurry Mode.
